There are many reasons why certain individuals develop blood clots.  Mostly blood clots form in the lower extremities, but also can form in the lungs, rarely with grave consequences.  Some people are genetically susceptible to develop blood clots, but most of the time, it is due to lack of mobility (sickness/hospitalization), obesity, sedentary life style, smoking, or any other underlying condition.  The critical question, after developing a blood clot is, what caused it and how long do I need to be on blood thinners. Again your Hematologist is uniquely qualified to evaluate and treat this condition, and answer all your relevant questions to your satisfaction.

List includes, but not limited to chronic lymphocytic leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, hairy cell leukemia, multiple myeloma, Hodgkin’s, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  Your local board certified Hematologist/Oncologist is fully equipped and trained to treat these conditions.  In rare circumstances, these patients at some stage of their disease, may require specialized care at a teaching hospital.  When that situation arises, we work closely with the teaching hospital to help our patients go smoothly through this process.

Acute leukemia is a condition when certain blood cells (especially white blood cells), start increasing and multiplying, losing control of self regulation.  Acute leukemia is a very serious life threatening condition, and needs to be evaluated and treated quickly.  Due to the intensity of care involved and specialized tests needed for accurate sub classification for these leukemias, I usually refer my patients to a teaching hospital.  Teaching hospitals are best equipped to treat these conditions, but we work with them and things which can be done locally, we offer them at our center.  This saves our patient travel time, and extra expenses.
