Blood Disorders

We Treat All Types of Blood Conditions

We treat all types of blood conditions from simple anemia to complicated problems including but not limited to pernicious anemia, anemia due to other chronic conditions, for example renal insufficiency. We also are fully able to treat conditions such as chronic lymphocytic and chronic myelogenous leukemia, lymphomas, Hodgkins disease, Myelodysplastic Syndrome, Myeloproliferative disorders such as essential thrombocytosis, myelofibrosis and polycythemia vera. We also treat sickle cell disease, iron overload state, including hemochromatosis and iron overload in patients with sickle cell disease due to frequent blood transfusions.

There is a whole host of blood disorders, and it is hard to make a generalized comment.  I will shed brief light on four common conditions, anemia, blood clots, chronic leukemia/lymphoma, and acute leukemia.

Anemia

Anemia is a condition in which hemoglobin/red blood cells (oxygen carrying cells) are decreased in your blood.  A person feels tired, “huffing and puffing” on minimal exertion, and skin pallor.  Causes are many, including nutritional deficiencies, which may include Iron, Vitamin B12, and or Folate.  Also, it could be a sign of underlying disease or condition, like thyroid disorder, hormone deficiency, or kidney problems.  These conditions can vary from serious conditions, or not so serious. Your blood specialist (Hematologist), can accurately pin point the cause of anemia and after successful treatment, we see very gratifying results, with improvement in quality of life.  Read More About Anemia.

Blood Clots

There are many reasons why certain individuals develop blood clots.  Mostly blood clots form in the lower extremities, but also can form in the lungs, rarely with grave consequences.  Some people are genetically susceptible to develop blood clots, but most of the time, it is due to lack of mobility (sickness/hospitalization), obesity, sedentary life style, smoking, or any other underlying condition.  The critical question, after developing a blood clot is, what caused it and how long do I need to be on blood thinners. Again your Hematologist is uniquely qualified to evaluate and treat this condition, and answer all your relevant questions to your satisfaction.

Chronic Leukemia/Lymphoma

List includes, but not limited to chronic lymphocytic leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia, hairy cell leukemia, multiple myeloma, Hodgkin’s, and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.  Your local board certified Hematologist/Oncologist is fully equipped and trained to treat these conditions.  In rare circumstances, these patients at some stage of their disease, may require specialized care at a teaching hospital.  When that situation arises, we work closely with the teaching hospital to help our patients go smoothly through this process.

Acute Leukemia

Acute leukemia is a condition when certain blood cells (especially white blood cells), start increasing and multiplying, losing control of self regulation.  Acute leukemia is a very serious life threatening condition, and needs to be evaluated and treated quickly.  Due to the intensity of care involved and specialized tests needed for accurate sub classification for these leukemias, I usually refer my patients to a teaching hospital.  Teaching hospitals are best equipped to treat these conditions, but we work with them and things which can be done locally, we offer them at our center.  This saves our patient travel time, and extra expenses.

The Treatment Process

ID & Review

Before patients receive treatment, we review with them the potential side effects and provide medications if some complications (nausea, vomiting) do occur. After our two RNs have identified the patient, reviewed labs, vital signs and verified the chemotherapy protocol, they review everything with the doctor before starting the treatment.

Treatment Begins

Once our thorough checklist is completed, we proceed with treatment. Our patients are constantly supervised with our experienced RNs and if any problems or side effects of treatment arise, we are able to treat them right away. Our experience shows that because of the environment of our facility, our patients feel right at home while receiving treatment.

During the Journey

Dr. Meelu and his staff work hard to ensure our patients are as comfortable and informed as possible throughout the duration of the treatment regimen. We thrive to ensure our patients’ well-being is our top priority.
